Pediatric Nutrition Supplements

When is it appropriate to give your child a pediatric nutrition supplemental beverage?

Pediatric supplements such as Pediasure, Carnation Instant Breakfast, and other nutritionally fortified beverages can be used to help children meet nutrient needs and support adequate growth. Poor appetite, picky eating, or increased nutrition needs may lead to nutrient deficiencies. Nutritional beverages can be a useful tool to help meet needs until diet intake and variety improve. Although these supplements can be provided as a sole source of nutrition, they are usually meant to supplement a diet short term.

How much is appropraite?

There is no official limit on how much is appropriate, but there are a couple of things to consider.

The goal of nutritional beverages is to supplement, not replace foods in your child’s diet. Offering them after meals and snacks and limiting the amount to only what is necessary can help keep the focus on solid foods.

Disclosure: pediasure is not appropriate for infants younger than 12 months. Please discuss with your child’s pediatrician before offering a nutritional supplement.
