Transition Strategies For Kids - Sensory Solutions

Transitioning between activities is a common trigger for meltdowns, tantrums, and undesired behaviors in children. Below is a list of tips and tricks to make transitions less challenging and more rewarding:

  1. Always remember to prepare your child for a transition. Give 2-3 warnings prior to clean-up time and remind them of what they will be doing next.
  2. Use special auditory or visual cues to help. Let your child set up a sand timer or choose the alarm sound on a device.
  3. Give choices when appropriate. A child can make simple decisions such as which book to read at bedtime or choose between two types of snacks. Allowing your child to take part in the transition can reduce opposition.
  4. Incorporate an activity. Use bubbles, motor movements like skipping or hopping, and simple games like “red-light-green-light” to make the transition more fun.
  5. Always give your child clear, simple directions during transitions and praise their positive behaviors.
